Malaysia is a federation of thirteen states and three federal territories in Southeast Asia with a total landmass of 329,847 km². The capital city is Kuala Lumpur while Putrajaya is the seat of the federal government. The country is separated into two regions - the Malay Peninsula and Borneo - by the South China Sea. Malaysia borders Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei and the Philippines. Located near the equator, the weather is characterized by tropical climate.
Population
Malaysia has a population of approximately 27.3 million.
Political Structure
Malaysia is a federal constitutional elective monarchy. The federal head of state of Malaysia is the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, commonly referred to as the King of Malaysia. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong is elected to a five-year term among the nine hereditary Sultans of the Malay states; the other four states, which have titular Governors, do not participate in the selection.
The system of government in Malaysia is closely modeled on that of Westminster parliamentary system, a legacy of British colonial rule. In practice however, more power is vested in the executive branch of government than in the legislative, and the judiciary has been weakened by sustained attacks by the government during the Mahathir era. Since independence in 1957, Malaysia has been governed by a multi-party coalition known as the Barisan Nasional.
Infrastructure and Economy
Malaysia Economy comes under East Asia and the pacific region, according to the classification of economies by region and income for the year 2005 by World Bank.
In the World Bank parlance, Malaysia is an upper middle-income country with GNI per capita reaching 3,780. Malaysia is modestly populated and endowed with abundant natural resources. It is also the largest producer of rubber, palm oil and tin, and they have began recently to exploit plentiful reserves of oil and timber.
Language
The primary language is Malay.
Currency
Legal tender in Malaysia is the Ringgit.
Law
Based on English common law. The judicial review of legislative acts in the Supreme Court at request of supreme head of the federation. Islamic law is applied to Muslims in matters of family law and religion. Malaysia have not accepted compulsory ICJ jurisdiction.
